Top 10 Golf Resorts

The best golf resorts combine championship courses with first class accommodation and dining. A scenic location is another bonus and a bit of pampering goes a long way. Golfers are happy to indulge in their sport all day but their non-golfing companions will need other activities to occupy them.

The Homestead – Hot Springs, Virginia

This is a historic resort with a view of the Appalachian Mountains and it’s particularly lovely in the fall.  There are three championship courses and each one has a separate clubhouse. It’s got one of the longest lists of amenities of any resort, including a premier spa, tennis courts, a world class shooting club, outdoor and indoor pool, bowling alley, movie theatre, and access to fly fishing with instruction. Guests enjoy 6-course meals in a formal dining room whilst being entertained by the resident orchestra. There is a Kids Club, 100 miles of trails, and guided nature walks. Golf Packages are offered throughout the year and include Early Bird rates.

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort – Bandon, Oregon

The links courses here have been compared to ones in Scotland. They stretch along the southern coast of Oregon, which gets its fair share of wind. The large dunes and pine trees make this a challenging resort and one that keen golfers will savor. Four courses make up the resort, namely Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, and Old Macdonald. After a day doing battle in the bunkers, the accommodation is warm and welcoming, ranging from a single room lodge to 4 bedroom cottages. Bandon Dunes also has bars, restaurants, and a golf clubhouse. There is a convenient shuttle service for guests to use.

Doral Golf Resort and Spa – Miami, Florida

Something for everyone awaits guests at Doral, including five palm-lined, championship 18-hole courses. ‘Blue Monster’ is used on the Pga Tour and is considered very challenging! It’s a Marriott Resort and the amenities include a fitness center, tennis courts, Jacuzzi, saunas, and a jogging trail. Children will enjoy Camp Doral, a club with activities for ages 5 – 12, and the Children’s Pool, whilst parents can relax in the spa or the Blue Lagoon Pool. Accommodation is in rooms and suites in cozy lodges, close to the main clubhouse.

Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa – Carefree, Arizona

Desert golf is a favorite amongst many players and this resort has two championship 18-hole courses in the Sonoran Desert with granite boulders and fabulous views. There is a choice of suites and villas to stay in and six different restaurants. The Golden Door Spa offers a variety of treatments and facilities, including a traditional Japanese bath and Pilates and yoga instruction. There is also a fitness center, tennis courts and four swimming pools.

The Greenbrier – White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

Many visitors have come to this location since 1778 to take advantage of the natural hot springs. Today, the resort contains three 18-hole championship courses, namely The Old White, the Greenbrier, and The Meadows. Many legendary players have competed here. Guests can enjoy the spa treatments, using the sulphur waters, and the grand architecture. There is a wide selection of accommodation from single rooms to 4 bedroom estate houses and 7 bedroom suites. Lots of different packages are on offer including four Golf Packages. Other facilities include the Tavern Casino, with table games and slots, and indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

Pinehurst Resort – Pinehurst, North Carolina

Pinehurst has a choice of eight golf courses and has hosted several championships. The 2014 US Open will be played here. Vacationing golfers will appreciate the slightly inclining sand hills for teeing off. There is a variety of accommodation including a luxury hotel, vacation villas, a lodge, and condominiums. Eight different eating venues serve delicious meals. Other activities include tennis and relaxing in the spa. For those who like to get out on the water, kayaking on Lake Pinehurst is popular.

Around Southern Pines: A Sandhills Album, North Carolina (Images of America Series)

$19.99

Carefully pieced together by author Stephen E. Massengill, Around Southern Pines: A Sandhills Album provides a fascinating and unique insight into life in the Sandhills area of North Carolina from the arrival of postcard photographer E.C. Eddy in 1907 to his retirement in 1945. The work includes not only portraits of such famous Americans as Lincoln Beachey, Gutzon Borglum, James Boyd, Annie Oakley, Donald Ross, and Walter J. Travis, but also views of ordinary citizens at work and play in Moore County. Chronicling such events as parades, fox hunts, golf tournaments, fairs and carnivals, slave reunions, and the first airplane flight in the county, Eddy’s photographic collection presents a definitive account of life and expansion in the Sandhills during the first half of the twentieth century. From the resorts of Southern Pines and Pinehurst to the surrounding towns of Aberdeen, Carthage, Lakeview, and Pine Bluff, Eddy’s images beautifully illustrate a rich period in American history.

Augusta and Aiken in Golf's Golden Age (Images of Sports Series)

Augusta and Aiken in Golf’s Golden Age (Images of Sports Series)

$6.49

The game of golf got its start in the Southeastern United States in 1892 on four holes with sand greens at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina. Within five years, Palmetto had expanded to eighteen holes and the first nine-hole course in neighboring Augusta, Georgia was designed at the Hotel Bon Air. For half a century, the Augusta-Aiken area flourished as the winter destination of choice for the rich, famous, and powerful in America. Presidents Taft, Harding, and Eisenhower vacationed here. Baseball great Ty Cobb bought a home in Augusta’s quaint Summerville neighborhood. It was here that Bobby Jones began the improbable journey towards a Grand Slam, then built his dream golf course. By the turn of the century, winter tourism and grand resort hotels in the Augusta-Aiken area were well established. A favorable winter climate and easy rail access drew vacationers to Highland Park Hotel (1866), Willcox Hotel (1898), and Park in the Pines (1900) in Aiken; Hotel Bon Air (1890) and Partridge Inn (1913) in Augusta; and Hampton Terrace Hotel and Golf Club (1903) in North Augusta. Resorts in Florida and the growth of the air travel industry later coupled to mark the area’s decline in winter tourism, but not before Augusta-Aiken’s place in golf history was secure. In this unique volume, vintage images and accompanying text recall the unfo rgettable legends, the meticulously maintained courses, and all of the grandeur associated with the game.

 Best Places to Golf: Northwest

Best Places to Golf: Northwest

$0.99

Best Places to Golf Northwest is an entertaining, full-color anecdotal guide to the premier golf destinations in the Pacific Northwest. Covering the area between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains and from British Columbia to northern Utah, this guide is written for local and visiting golfers. What distinguishes it from other such books is that it’s not simply a compilation of dry facts like yardage and slope rating for each course (although some of this information is included). Nor is it meant to be a comprehensive guide to all the courses in the area. Rather, this is a travel guide for people who love golf. It’s a fun, absorbing read filled with colorful descriptions of the courses along with the cities and regions where they’re located, rendered with the author’s irresistible blend of humor and personal anecdote. The book’s 95 profiled courses — a mix of inexpensive venues, upscale public courses, and special-occasion resorts — provide a springboard for a lively discussion of golfing as sport, diversion, and pleasure.

BOOMSDAY’S heroine is Cassandra Devine, a charismatic 29-year-old blogger who incites massive political turmoil when, outraged over mounting Social Security debt, she politely suggests that Baby Boomers be given government incentives to kill themselves by age 75. Her modest proposal catches fire with millions of her outraged peers (“Generation Whatever”) and an ambitious Senator seeking to gain the youth vote in his presidential campaign. With the help of Washington’s greatest spin doctor, the blogger and the politician try to ride the issue of euthanasia for Boomers (they call it “Transitioning”) all the way to the White House, over the forceful objections of the Religious Right and, of course, Baby Boomers, who are deeply offended by demonstrations on the golf courses of their retirement resorts.

Excerpt: Providenciales is an island in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The island has an area of 98 km (38 sq mi) and an approximate population of 15,542, making it the largest island in population and the third largest in area. It is served by the Providenciales International Airport. It is home to the only conch farm in the world. As recently as 1964, Providenciales (usually called Provo) did not have a single wheeled vehicle. Following in the footsteps of Club Med, the island’s first large hotel and casino complex opened in 1990 and touched off a development boom. Provo is now the most tourist-oriented and developed of the Turks and Caicos Islands, boasting many resort hotels and an 18-hole golf course. The island has recently become popular with retirees from around the world, kindling a boom of residential development. Given its recent evolution, the atmosphere is more reminiscent of the Florida Keys than Nassau, with little of the character of other Caribbean isles. The resorts on Providenciales are primarily centered on five mile-long (8 km) Grace Bay, with its brilliant white sand and shimmering turquoise waters. Apart from the beaches, Provo’s charm lies in its rugged hills and ridges, which are carpeted with prickly pear cactus and scrub. The trump card, however, remains the world class diving: miles and miles of coral reefs are temptingly close to shore and the Island is close to a common migration route for the Humpback whale. Provo is also surrounded by uninhabited cays that are easily reached by chartered boat or excursion. Before Provo became a popular tourist destination, there were three small centers of population – Blue Hills, The Bight (on Grace Bay) and Five Cays. Now many houses have been built thoughout the island (predominantly… More:

Can Life Prevail? – A Radical Approach To The Environmental Crisis

$21.31

With the train of civilisation hurtling at ever-increasing speed towards self-destruction, the most pressing question facing humanity in the 21st century is that of the preservation of life. Can Life Prevail?, the latest book by Finnish environmentalist Pentti Linkola, provides a radical yet firmly grounded perspective on the ecological problems threatening both the biosphere and human culture. With essays covering topics as diverse as animal rights, extinction, deforestation, terrorism and overpopulation, Can Life Prevail? for the first time makes the lucid, challenging writing of Linkola available to an English-speaking public.”By decimating its woodlands, Finland has created the grounds for prosperity. We can now thank prosperity for bringing us – among other things – two million cars, millions of glaring, grey-black electronic entertainment boxes, and many unnecessary buildings to cover the green earth. Wealth and surplus money have led to financial gambling and rampant social injustice, whereby ‘the common people’ end up contributing to the construction of golf courses, classy hotels, and holiday resorts, while fattening Swiss bank accounts. Besides, the people of wealthy countries are the most frustrated, unemployed, unhappy, suicidal, sedentary, worthless and aimless people in history. What a miserable exchange.”Kaarlo Pentti Linkola was born in Helsinki in 1932. Having spent most of his life working as a professional fisherman, he now continues to lead a materially simple existence in the countryside. A renowned figure in Finland, since the 1960s Linkola has published numerous books on environmentalism. Today, he is among the foremost exponents of the philosophy of deep ecology.
