How to study quantum mechanics as an engineer?
So, we’ve been given 12 weeks to learn a bit about quantum mechanics. There is A LOT of content, most of which goes over my head.
My question is, how should I approach this course? Spend all my time trying to understand what’s going on, (like anybody really understands quantum mechanics) or just understand how to do the tutorial questions set?
I can sit and read the lecture slides but I don’t seem to be taking anything from them. More like, I’m having trouble picturing what is being described.

I certainly agree with you, I would just understand how to do the tutorial questions set. If it becomes necessary to understand some aspect of quantum mechanics, in your future employment, then you will be motivated to learn the very specific aspect of quantum mechanics, as needed.
I majored in physics, and by the time I got to quantum mechanics I was not very motivated. I would say, however, that the TRANSITION from classical mechanics (Newtonian physics) to quantum mechanics — why the old physics broke down; how Einstein resisted quantum mechanics with its randomness (“I cannot believe that God plays dice with the Universe”) — is worth learning, along with the early equations of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the cloud/probability model of the atom that replaced the Bohr model, etc.
I would suggest a start, by reading the Wikipedia articles on Heisenberg uncertainty principle, quantum mechanics, related topics. Finally, there’s a great DVD available with lots of visuals to explain quantum mechanics at an intelligent-lay-person level:

This dissertation analyzes the diaries and print productions of New York’s “improving” farmers and explores the ways that new market values changed how they understood and interacted with agricultural landscapes.
